Jewish Family Service (JFS)
has been in existence since 1888. The fiscal year we are currently
facing is the most critical ever. Our United Way allocation has
been cut by 32 percent. We anticipate a great need for financial
support for our clients in light of the upcoming winter season,
the rising cost of heating, the spiraling costs of utility services,
the increased costs of basic necessities such as food and other
factors such as unemployment, and in many cases, underemployment.
We believe there are 150 clients
in one way or another that must be served, and that our immediate
need is to secure a minimum of $30,000 to meet what may turn out
to be the worst year ever. No man, woman or child should
ever go hungry or be cold.
To help alleviate some of our financial
crisis, we will be undertaking a silent auction at the Jewish
Community Center.
Final results of the auction will
be announced on May 17, 2009.
Please think about what you might
be able to provide so that when you receive the call, arrangements
can be made to pick up your donation. If you cannot contribute
an item to be auctioned, services can be offered or monetary gifts
accepted. All contributions are tax deductible (Federal I.D. 23-6296584)
and all will be acknowledged with a receipt.
If for some reason you are not personally
contacted, you may call Jewish Family Service at 823-5137, and
someone will be able to assist you in making your contribution.
Thank you for your continuing support
of JFS.
Sincerely,
Howard J. Grossman, AICP Executive Director

Annual Luncheon Honoree Named
| Dear Friends: |
February 2009 |
This year, JFS is honored and privileged
to have selected Sandra Warshal, Of Blessed Memory, as our honoree,
for her distinguished service to this community and to Jewish
Family Service (JFS). She was a source of delight and integrity
that made her a significantly special individual for at least
forty years, ranging from being President, to chairing and enhancing
the JFS Student Aid Committee, to participating as the Board representative
for the Federal Emergency Management Agency Food Program in Luzerne
County, to chairing the annual JFS Friends Campaign, to being
the first donor for the JFS Naming Rights Program in the Conference
Room in honor of her father and mother, and so much more.
Sandy MADE A DIFFERENCE in every
single event, activity, person, or organization that she touched.
She served as a volunteer at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and
was a longtime volunteer at Planned Parenthood. She was past Chairperson
of the board at United Hebrew Institute and an Eternal Light Member
and officer of the board at Temple Israel Synagogue.
It was a privilege to have had the
honor to know, work with, and share with Sandy the exemplary quality
of service that she consistently lent to everything that she touched
and the many successes that she achieved in a life of community
participation.
It is, for these reasons that we
chose to honor Sandy Warshal at this year’s annual luncheon
at the Woodlands on May 13, 2009 at noon.
We are also pleased to be celebrating
76 years of providing services to the Greater Wilkes-Barre area,
under the corporate seal.
We carry out many programs and services
that often are overlooked, but are vital to the lives of many
people. Here are a few:
- COUNSELING AND CASE MANAGEMENT
- STUDENT LOANS AND GRANTS
- KOSHER HOME DELIVERED MEALS
- BENEFITS CHECKUP
|
- RESETTLEMENT
- KIDS CARE CLUB
- HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SUPPORT
- HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAM
|
On behalf of Jewish Family Service,
we encourage you to submit an ad for the event, and look forward
to your support of what we believe will be an outstanding event.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.
Sincerely,
Sally Lee Sagenkahn, Chair, Annual
Luncheon Committee
